We were having a long morning, so I opened up the kids’ Little People nativity set for the first time. The kids really enjoy playing with it, but I’m finding the whole thing a little hard to explain. For example, the older two got in an argument over whether the baby was baby Jesus or God. They turned to me to settle the issue, and I of course said he was both. I also told them he was God’s Son. That got me a very quizzical look indeed. M also asked, “Was God born on a farm?” She answered her own question, however, saying, “There’s a camel, so he must have been.” Other questions included, “What’s an angel? Do they help Santa?” and “Is this why we get presents at Christmas?” At least they had fun. It can’t hurt to be talking about God to them, I suppose, even if this particular subject is rather complicated.
